PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

What are the practice or patient care problems being addressed by this activity? 

  • Single sided deafness and appropriate implementation of cochlear implant technology
  • Understanding the neuroscience of hearing transduction
  • Management of complicated and challenging neurotology surgical and ethical cases
  • The principles and practice of physician  wellness
  • Disease mechanisms, diagnosis and management options of 3rd window syndromes
  • Disease mechanisms, diagnosis and management options of facial nerve disorders
  • Management of functionally and anatomically complex CI cases
  • Applications of stereotactic radiation in the management of skull base tumors 

Why do these issues exist? Is there a deficit in providers’ knowledge or skill? Is there a deficit in healthcare system process or outcomes? Your response may include more than one or a combination of all.

These issues exist because of on-going progress – both in clinical and basic science research - in multiple fields and changing criteria for intervention, all of which requires intermittent update of providers’ knowledge and skill. The infrequent exposure to some of these issues requires a comprehensive review of these topics and demonstration of how principles are applied in case examples. Best practices in the above practice gaps will be discussed, and an audience survey system will be able to query the learners to gain treatment perspectives.  Great attention to physician wellness is required to maintain a healthy and high-functioning workforce.

At the end of this educational activity, participants will be able to…

  • Understand the indications, nuances, and cost/benefit ratio of cochlear implantation for single sided deafness
  • Possess state of the art knowledge of hearing transduction and promising basic science research in gene editing with the hope of restoring sensorineural hearing loss.
  • Gain skills to manage challenging or difficult surgical or ethical cases, including complications, in Neurotology
  • Engage in best practices for sustained physician wellness and recognize when a physician, including ourselves, is not well (burnout).
  • Diagnose and manage unusual facial nerve disorders
  • Learn the state of the art in new technology in cochlear implantation and the expanding indications for cochlear implantation
  •  Recognize, diagnose, and manage third window disorders of the inner ear
